DAY 2 - Hunter Valley

DESCRIPTION OF THE 2017 COURSE

Distance: 50kms

Start: Audrey Wilkinson Wines - 750 De Beyers Road Pokolbin

Finish: Briar Ridge Vineyard - 593 Mount View Rd, Mount View

Start Time: 8:00am

The second stage of the Port to Port MTB leaves the beaches and heads inland to the amazing vineyard region of the Hunter Valley. This stage is pretty simple, it involves two epic climbs split by an even more epic descent in-between! Make sure to strap your climbing legs on for today as they will be required straight out of the blocks!

2017 will see a new starting venue in Audrey Wilkinson Winery being utilised for Stage Two of the Port to Port MTB. Audrey Wilkinson is a spectacular venue not too far down the road from the previous starting destination and will allow riders a bit more of a warm up before reaching the first ascent of the day.

The course will follow 3.5kms of never before used fire roads exiting the winery and it is here that the course rises for 10km up through spectacular trees, ferns and surrounds all the way to the top.  Once reaching the top of the Polkobin State Forest riders connect into a series of epic moto single tracks that twist and turn across the ridgeline that will test the riders’ ability on the way to the famed Rabbit Hole descent.

The Rabbit Hole descent takes riders down, down, down into the depths of the forest below earning its name as it seems to go on forever! Just when you think you have reached the bottom, down it goes again, and again! With high speeds, drifty hairpin turns and plenty of airtime this descent will have riders frothing all the way down.

When you finally reach the bottom of the Rabbit Hole a creek crossing then brings riders out into the stunning country scenery of Cedar Creek. Coming out along the river line a 5km tarmac section will allow riders to have a breather and spin the legs out as they pass through Millfield with the stage’s second climb up Mount View looming in the distance!

The Mount View climb winds up through the countryside past green, grassy farmland as it claws back up onto the ridge. Returning riders will know what they are in for as they enter the closing kilometres of the stage and will be sure to leave a tiny bit in the tank!

If you are a new rider, you will reach the top of Mount View and head towards a blisteringly fast series of downhill tarmac switchbacks where you are unlikely to have time to look up and enjoy the stunning views over the Hunter Valley. It’s not all downhill from here though, the last few hundred meters will have riders grovelling up one of the steepest pinches they have ever ridden only to be met by the finish line and some incredible food at Briar Ridge.

STAGE HIGHLIGHT: If not the first climb up into the forest then it has to be The Rabbit Hole! This 10km long descent is wonderland for mountain bikers and one of the highlights of the whole event!
